The Director of Transportation develops, implements, and directs the overall operations of the transportation network to include safety compliance, process flow, equipment, staff, and financial wellbeing.  This position has primary operating responsibility for not only KK Way, LTD (a wholly owned transportation subsidiary of Kolbe), but also extensively coordinates transportation-related functions for all Kolbe & Kolbe Millwork Co., Inc. operations.
 
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 
The Director of Transportation is responsible for all transportation activities ranging from inbound raw materials to delivery of finished goods via private fleet, 3PL, or final mile partners. Additionally, oversees the dispatch office, vehicle repair facility, and public gas station.  Garaged in 26 States, the Fleet consists of 110 cars, vans and pickups along with 40 semi-tractors and 145 trailers. The weekly distribution network covers 42+ states weekly and 3 million miles annually.

1. Safety 
  • Implement Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
  • Over-the-Road Driver Safety Bonus Program.
  • Conduct quarterly driver ELD audits.  
  • Accident claims handling. 
2. Compliance at State, Federal, and international levels

STATE LEVEL

  • Annual vehicle registration renewal all fleet units. 
  • Renew and distribute annual insurance cards for fleet. 
  • Calculate and issue International Registration Plan credentials. 
  • Manage International Fuel Tax Program to include quarterly IFTA reports, payments, and audits. 
  • Individual state permits such as property valuation and tax for AR, KS, NM, OR, and NY.
FEDERAL LEVEL
  • DOT Interstate Authority, MCS-150, 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, Unified Carrier Registration, Standard Carrier Alpha Certification.
INTERNALTIONAL LEVEL
  • Canadian Provincial Registrations for Alberta, British Colombia, Ontario, and Quebec. 
  • Work with multiple Brokers for importing and exporting into Canada. 
3. Process Flow 
  • Nurture external relationships with manufacturers, suppliers, freight brokers, vendors, and last-mile carriers, to consistently meet deadlines as cost-effectively as possible. 
  • Participate in Strategic Planning.  
  • develop short- and long-term departmental goals.  
  • and Implement items from approved plan.
  • Approve Carrier Agreements for 3rd Party Services.  
  • Supervise Truck Maintenance Shop. 
  • Utilize Continuous Improvement for the transportation value stream. 
  • Work with Customer Support department to approve job site deliveries and drop trailers. 
4. Equipment and Operations 
  • Specify and purchase fleet vehicles. 
  • This includes acquisition, maintenance and remarketing as determined by cost effective life cycling. 
  • Ensure specifications for all vehicles, up fitting, and decals align with corporate needs and goals. 
  • Proactively manage Penske tractor leases to limit under/over mileage billing.  
  • Manage Enterprise Leased Vehicles and those with Contract Maintenance. 
  • Maintain strong working relationships with all vendors and appropriate level of participation with industry groups.
  • Fuel purchase and contracts. 
  • Maintain non-expiring Trailer Plates. 
  • Facilitate OTR vehicle repairs. 
  • Sign and Return Driver/Vehicle Inspection Reports. 
  • Use Fleetsoft and Motive to manage Kolbe & KK Way fleet vehicles. 
5. Staff 
  • Driver recruiting and onboarding.
  • Implement Driver Handbook and update as necessary.
  • KK Way Uniforms. 
  • Participate in Annual Meetings for Drivers, Service Tech's, and Sales. 
  • Supervise Gas Station Operation and Compliance. 
  • Utilize tablets and train KK Way Drivers and apps such as Motive. 
6. Financial Planning 
  • General Ledger coding and approval of KK Way invoices. 
  • Review, code, and approve monthly credit card expenses.
  • Oversee month end billing and intercompany transactions. 
  • Supply accounting with KK Way hours for Kolbe vehicle repairs month end. 
  • Analyze monthly financials to limit expenses and grow profits. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, transportation, business, or similar field. 
  • 5+ years of experience in an industry-related field, transportation experience a plus.
  • Experience managing teams of full-time and part-time team members. 
  • Experience in analyzing metrics and data-driven decision making.
  • Proven ability to consistently deliver on KPIs. 
  • Technical and applied understanding of logistics software and warehouse management systems.
  • Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
  • Detail-oriented. 
  • Multitasking capabilities. 
  • Displaying calmness under pressure since the job frequently involves stressful situations. 
  • Attending to detail so that mistakes aren't made and operations thrown off course. 
  • Prioritizing to make sure the most pressing issues get accomplished first.
